THE COMING OF LUGH A CELTIC WONDER-TALE RETOLD BY ELLA YOUNG ILLUSTRATED BY MAUD GONNE
THE COMING OF LUGH
Transcriber’s Notes
A young sun‑god named Lugh is whisked away by the ocean ruler, Manannán, to a radiant realm beyond the world’s edge. There he grows among singing birds, crimson‑blossomed apple trees, and wondrous beasts—white‑deer with golden horns, black‑mane lions and shining unicorns—all while learning the strength of his own emerging power. The enchanted country fills his days with sport and wonder, yet the hills and rivers of his native Ireland linger in his heart.
Back in Ireland, darkness spreads as the misshapen Fomorians seize the Cauldron of Plenty and the Spear of Victory, leaving the native De Dāna’s weakened and desperate. Manannán presents Lugh with the legendary Sword of Light, reminding him of the promise he whispered to his homeland’s mountains and waters. With a gleaming helm, a shining breastplate, and a band of brave companions, Lugh prepares to ride home and face the looming threat, a journey that will test the bright courage of the very god of light.
