A cold December night finds a spry eighteen‑year‑old riding the Boston express through the bleak, snow‑clad woods of Maine. In the smoking‑car a petty dispute with an irascible conductor over a lost ticket reveals the lad’s quick wit and a hint of trouble brewing among the fellow passengers, including a solemn missionary clutching a cryptic book. The cramped carriage becomes a microcosm of tension, setting the tone for a journey that will soon leave the steel rails behind.
When the train finally screeches into Bangor, the young traveler steps onto icy streets, his mind still buzzing from the conductor’s warning. The city’s flickering lamps soon give way to a remote wilderness where a makeshift camp lies hidden beneath deep drifts of snow. Here he must confront the unforgiving elements, lurking predators, and the mysteries hinted at by the enigmatic missionary, all while trying to keep his wits and his life intact.
