Description

Elliott Cameron has always lived in a world of comfortable routines, her life built up over sixteen years of small comforts and family expectations. When her father announces an urgent, secretive mission to France, the stability of her American home shatters and she finds herself on the brink of an evacuation she never imagined. The novel opens with her trying to carve a role for herself—secretary, student, anything—to stay close to the man she adores, while the war that once seemed distant begins to intrude on everyday life.

As the country’s priorities shift and the streets whisper of conflict, Elliott must decide whether to cling to the familiar or to step into an unknown future. Her sharp wit and stubborn curiosity lead her through a maze of bureaucratic red tape, family secrets, and the uneasy feeling that the world outside her doorstep is changing beyond recognition. Through humor and quiet determination, the story captures the uneasy transition from a sheltered adolescence to a consciousness shaped by global upheaval.
