In a modest New England town, Solomon Peaslee returns home from his routine stroll up‑street with unexpected news: he’s been summoned as a grand juror for the upcoming September term. Over a humble lunch of salt cod, potatoes and a thin pie, he boasts about the modest stipend and mileage allowance, while his sharp‑tongued wife questions the true value of “sitting around and talking.” Their banter reveals a marriage built on practical concerns, good humor, and a shared skepticism of civic duties that seem more about prestige than profit.
Soon a stray calico cat wanders into their kitchen, its multicolored coat and curious demeanor turning the Peaslees’ ordinary day into a series of small adventures. As the feline’s presence disrupts meals, conversations, and even the local gossip, Solomon and his wife find themselves navigating unexpected responsibilities—and a surprising amount of heart—beyond the courtroom’s call.
