Their leader, Miss Gordon, promises a mysterious “surprise” that bubbles the girls with anticipation, even as they wonder why their usual plans are being postponed. Outside, Veve McGuire, the neighborhood girl who has kept her distance from the troop, watches longingly, clutching a red mitten and dreaming of a gigantic snowman.
