Description

In the moonlit courtyard of Mission San José, the notes of a guitar and a serenade set the tone for a story at the crossroads of romance and empire. Young Carmelita Mendoza, daughter of the mission’s stern administrator, becomes the object of both admiration and teasing from the dashing Captain Morando, a soldier whose bravado masks a deeper loyalty to his community. Their banter, framed by the golden hills of Santa Clara Valley, hints at a love that must navigate the rigid expectations of Spanish‑Mexican tradition and the restless ambitions of a land on the brink of change.

The novel unfolds against the turbulent years 1842‑1846, when American, British and indigenous forces all vie for influence in California. Secret service operatives, a charismatic English envoy, and a proud Indian chief weave a tapestry of intrigue that drags the Mendoza family into diplomatic games far beyond their hacienda. As alliances shift and whispers of war grow louder, readers are invited to watch how personal desire and political duty collide in the early days of a continent in transition.

John Augustine Cull

Known for a historical novel set in early California, this little-documented writer is remembered today mainly through a single surviving book. That rarity gives the work an added sense of curiosity for readers who enjoy overlooked fiction from the early 20th century.
