Description

Nat Morton is a lanky teen who knows the lakefront like the back of his hand, spending his days swinging his feet on the pier and listening to the subtle signals of steamers and engines. When a rowboat drifts helplessly into the path of a massive freight steamer, Nat’s quick thinking and intimate knowledge of the whistles prompt him to act before anyone else can. He dives in, stripped to his undershirt, fighting the churn of propeller wash to pull the fragile vessel to safety, proving that courage can burst forth from the most unassuming places.

The daring rescue earns Nat a reputation among the dock workers, opening the door to a steady job that promises both responsibility and new challenges. As he steps into the world of pilots and captains, he discovers that the lake holds not just opportunities but hidden perils that will test his skill and resolve. The early chapters set the stage for a spirited adventure where a boy’s love of water becomes the engine of his growth.
