THE BONFIRE.
The Bonfire.
Jasper Crabbe is a reclusive, wiry old man whose tattered coat and solitary farm on the edge of the common set him apart from the lively village of Yateshull. The townsfolk, hungry for gossip, spin wild rumors about his past—convict, miser, or something far darker—while the children tease him relentlessly, unaware of the grief that tightens his heart. As the harvest season approaches, the community prepares for the traditional bonfire night, a celebration that soon draws the curious youngsters onto Jasper’s hedges in search of kindling.
When the boys, led by the mischievous Peter Perks, haul away a bundle of sticks, Jasper’s sudden outburst catches them off guard, and his demand for justice threatens to turn a harmless prank into a serious confrontation. The incident exposes the fragile balance between fear, compassion, and the harsh judgments of a close‑knit village, inviting listeners to wonder how both the old man and the children might find common ground before the night’s flames grow higher.
