Description

The narrator, a former schoolmate of the charismatic Anthony Bathurst, reunites with him after eight years and is instantly reminded of Bathurst’s razor‑sharp mind, athletic grace, and effortless charm. Their shared history stretches back to Oxford and to the annual cricket week at the grand Considine Manor, where friendships and rivalries were forged under the summer sun. Amid the genteel bustle of Sir Charles Considine’s estate, the narrator observes a cast of aristocratic characters—Mary with her violet eyes, the earnest Jack, and the ambitious Prescott—each playing their part in the social tableau. The atmosphere is ripe with competition, whispered flirtations, and the promise of a memorable sporting contest.

Yet beneath the genteel veneer, an unsettling event looms: a baffling crime that will later be known as the “Billiard Room Mystery.” As the final cricket match approaches, the narrator senses that something is amiss, and Bathurst’s legendary deductive talents are called upon once more. The stage is set for a classic puzzle, where keen observation and instinctive reasoning will be the only tools to untangle the strange circumstances that have begun to unfold.
