When the Clifton family arrives in fog‑laden London with hopes of a breakthrough, they discover the city is less welcoming than the glossy advertisements promised. Clifton’s teenage daughter Lily, a wiry New Zealander famed for daring bicycle tricks, is slated for a coveted Castle performance—but the local agents keep insisting they’ve never heard of her. Frustrated and bewildered, the family scrambles to prove Lily’s talent and secure the contract that could change their fortunes.
Father Clifton refuses to accept defeat, pounding the streets of the capital with press clippings and polite threats, while mother Ma worries about money, reputation, and a child to feed if the deal falls through. Their nightly rides through the soot‑stained suburbs become both practice sessions for Lily and moments of strained camaraderie, as Pa offers sweets and violets to keep morale high. The clash between the Clifton’s fierce ambition and the indifferent, “fat freak” agents provides a comedic, fast‑paced backdrop to Lily’s relentless rehearsals.
