About the author

Born in Angoulême, France, in 1861, J. André Castaigne studied art with well-known academic painters Jean-Léon Gérôme and Alexandre Cabanel. He went on to work as an artist and engraver, developing a style that combined careful draftsmanship with dramatic storytelling.

Castaigne later became especially prominent as an illustrator in the United States. He is often remembered for illustrating the first edition of The Phantom of the Opera, and for the energetic, detailed images he created for books and large historical panoramas.

Today, he is best known as one of those artists whose pictures helped shape how readers imagined classic stories in the era before film became dominant. His illustrations still feel lively and cinematic, which makes them a natural fit for readers who enjoy richly visual storytelling.
