Letitia “Tish” Carberry finds herself convalescing in a bustling city hospital, more out of a broken knee and a fresh coat of paint than any serious ailment. As a member of the Ladies’ Committee she feels obliged to keep a record of the odd happenings around her, even while the night is filled with screeches, frantic footsteps, and the occasional bewildered nurse. The opening scene crackles with humor as Tish hurls a traveling clock at Miss Lewis, only to be met with a sleepy offer of buttermilk and a brisk command to investigate the disturbance.
Beyond the bedroom door, Tish discovers a small crowd of nurses gathered around a pale, trembling girl in a chair—a tableau that hints at deeper anxieties beneath the hospital’s routine. The nurses trade whispered stories of past mishaps while trying to soothe their patient, and Tish, still in her nightgown and cane, steps into the hallway, drawn into a mystery that mixes the absurd with the earnest. The novel promises a witty, slightly eccentric portrait of friendship, duty, and the unexpected drama that can erupt in even the most ordinary of places.
