Part 1
Marigold’s world is a cold, regulated frontier where a person can be stripped of every right with a single status label: Abandoned. When her husband disappears, she is forced to complete endless forms that catalog her body, mind and fertility, turning her into a commodity for the Protection People. The process is a harrowing, almost ritualistic undressing, and each line she fills brings her closer to a fate she never imagined—exile, confiscation, or even slavery.
As the night stretches on, Marigold wrestles with the stark reality of her new status, the flickering lights of the habitat, and the lingering hope that a small credit balance might buy her a chance at escape or a final message to her children. The story follows her desperate attempts to retain some agency in a system designed to erase her identity, setting the stage for a tense confrontation with the forces that control her future.

A little-known science fiction writer remembered for a single published story, Donald F. Daley left behind one intriguing piece of mid-century magazine SF: "The Abandoned of Yan." His brief record adds to the story's air of mystery and forgotten-world charm.
