Description

Sandy Steele is a lanky, quick‑moving teenager whose mind swings between baseball scores and the promise of a big expedition. When his father, a government geologist, abruptly cancels a summer trek to Alaska and heads instead for the iron‑rich Mesabi Range in Minnesota, Sandy is left juggling disappointment and curiosity. The conversation at home reveals a looming problem: the once‑abundant high‑grade ore is dwindling, and someone must find a new vein before the mines lose their value.

Set against the backdrop of a modest Midwestern town, the story blends the chatter of little‑league games with the weight of national industry. As Sandy watches his friends make plans for camps and trips, he begins to sense that the Mesabi expedition could become more than a routine survey. With his father's expertise and his own restless energy, the first act promises a mixture of family bonds, youthful ambition, and a hint of a deeper quest beneath the earth's surface.
