Description

Sandy Steele, a lanky high‑school junior from sunny California, boards a cramped flight with his father, a government geologist, and a handful of friends bound for the rugged north. Their mission, part of a joint American‑Canadian study of ancient glacial movements, will take them across the Canadian wilderness to Alaska, where they'll drive a truck and tend a prize team of huskies bred by Professor Crowell. The promise of snow‑capped peaks, scientific discoveries, and a once‑in‑a‑lifetime dog‑sled race fills the teens with eager anticipation for their Christmas‑break adventure.

As the plane touches down, a surprising detail emerges: Dr. Steele slips a .45 Colt from his coat, a precaution that hints at hidden risks beyond ordinary fieldwork. With the mysterious firearm tucked away, Sandy and his companion Jerry must balance careful observation of the ice‑age terrain with the responsibility of guiding the sled dogs through unforgiving landscapes. The story sets the stage for a blend of youthful curiosity, rugged wilderness travel, and the subtle suspense of a secret that may shape their Alaskan journey.
