In a modest London neighbourhood, Selia—a quick‑witted piano prodigy—gets swept into an unexpected partnership with the affable Mr. Harold Withersquash. Harold has just learned his uncle died, leaving him a tidy sum, and he sees the windfall as a ticket out of their “third‑class” lives. Selia, pragmatic as ever, listens as he proposes they chase the glitter of high society, perhaps even a marriage, before they even know the city’s streets.
The pair set off in a haggard taxi, the driver’s frizzled beard a comforting reminder that the world beyond their doorstep is both strange and welcoming. As they glide toward Kensington, they swap plans for new clothes, polished manners, and the rituals that will mark their ascent. Their banter mixes earnest optimism with comic missteps, and listeners are invited to share in the thrill of two novices navigating elite etiquette.

A pioneering film critic and curator, she helped turn movies into something museums and scholars took seriously. Her work in London and at New York's Museum of Modern Art shaped how film would be preserved, studied, and celebrated.
