Description

In the sleepy town of Melkbridge, the newly built Devitt mansion dominates the main road, a bold statement of wealth that draws both admiration and suspicion. Its owner, Montague Devitt, is a seasoned industrialist whose life is stitched together by strategic marriages and bustling bohemian clubs in London. His children—Harold, the introspective elder son; Lowther, a carefree socialite; and Victoria, a strikingly perfect daughter—each embody a different facet of the family’s public façade, while the patriarch wrestles with an inexplicable distance from his flawless offspring.

Amid this backdrop, a young woman named Mavis navigates a world that offers her little protection. Though bright and eager, she finds herself entangled in the expectations of a society that prizes appearances over genuine care. As she steps beyond the safety of her own modest circle, the first chapters trace her tentative attempts to forge connections, hinting at the challenges that will shape her journey in a town where reputation often outweighs compassion.
