Description

In 1804, a twenty‑year‑old joins the 59th infantry, eager to begin a military career. He is swiftly drawn into Napoleon’s massive armament on the Atlantic coast, where plans to land an army on England are being readied. The opening scenes sketch the sprawling camps from Boulogne to Étaples, the thousands of soldiers, artillery, and the elaborate logistics that underpinned the daring invasion scheme.

He recounts daily life in the camps: drills, the clatter of cannons being assembled, and the constant flow of supplies onto hundreds of landing craft. The memoir captures both the anticipation of an imminent crossing and the bureaucratic hurdles of moving men, horses, and guns across the Channel. By staying close to the infantry’s perspective, he offers listeners a vivid sense of the soldiers’ morale, the scale of the operation, and the broader atmosphere that defined the early years of the Empire’s wars.
