The story opens on the crumbling fortunes of an old noble house whose lands have been sold off, leaving only the main estate, Næsset, to carry the family name. In a bold move to preserve dignity, the patriarch secures a royal patent and reshapes the remaining property into the new Baroniet Næsset, complete with a modest capital and a freshly minted title for his heir. The narrative is peppered with dry humor and detailed observations of rural Danish life in the early nineteenth century.

In the first act we meet Helmuth, the newly appointed baron, a diligent manager who balances the farm's affairs with the expectations of aristocratic society. His marriage to the widowed Baroness Juliane seems stable until a chance encounter in Copenhagen with the spirited Alvilda Raskowitz sparks an unexpected romance. As Helmuth grapples with duty, desire, and the pressures of inheritance, the family’s future hangs in a delicate balance, setting the stage for both comedic mishaps and poignant reflections on legacy.
