Description

A fierce Mediterranean levanter sweeps across a craggy island, tearing trees from their roots and turning tranquil streams into raging torrents. As the storm subsides, fishermen gather on the shore, swapping grim tales of recent wrecks—among them a crippled English paddle‑wheel troop ship whose crew and passengers have been left adrift. Into this battered landscape arrives Tom, clutching a sealed dispatch from Sir Brook, which carries a desperate request: should he and his sister‑in‑law Lucy shelter the ship’s officers, or must the men find refuge elsewhere?

The letter thrusts the modest household into a precarious decision, pitting duty and hospitality against the harsh realities of a small, isolated cottage. Tom’s restless mind races between the allure of adventure and the quiet, fragile life he shares with Lucy, whose health already trembles under the strain. Listeners are invited to follow the unfolding dilemma, feeling the tension of a community caught between the sea’s fury and the demands of war.
