Description

The story opens on a crisp autumn day, when the countryside is painted with low‑lying clouds, golden leaves and a river that ripples like a mirror. In a carriage, the aging patriarch Peter Barrington travels with his sister, his granddaughter, and a few loyal servants toward the family estate he has not seen in years. The landscape is described with a vivid mix of grandeur and subtle melancholy, hinting at both the beauty of the estate’s surroundings and the weight of memories it carries.

As they approach the imposing stone gate of Cobham Park, the children’s excitement clashes with the adults’ caution. The old man’s voice trembles with nostalgia, while the young girl, Fifine, clutches at the hope that this grand house might once again be theirs. Their arrival is marked by a comical mishap with a lock and a sudden, impromptu welcome from the household staff, setting a tone of gentle humor amid the undercurrents of lost heritage and the promise of new beginnings.
