Description

Michael boards a bustling Paddington train, luggage carefully pre‑sent, eager yet uneasy about the adventure that awaits in Oxford. A teasing exchange about misplaced golf clubs with his friend Alan hints at the camaraderie and gentle ribbing that will colour his university days. As the countryside rushes by, the spires and domes of the ancient city rise on the horizon, filling him with a mix of awe and self‑conscious dread.

When he finally steps out of the hansom at St. Mary’s, Michael finds himself navigating the maze of cobbled streets and bewildering college rituals, relying on the occasional advice of seasoned alumni who seem as foggy as the early morning mist. The novel captures his inner dialogue as he balances the desire to belong with the fear of exposing his inexperience, all set against the timeless backdrop of learned halls and bustling cafés. Through witty observations and poignant moments, his first week becomes a delicate dance between youthful idealism and the inevitable reality of academic life.
