A weary scholar from the bustling province of Anhui, Guo Qiao has spent years chasing the imperial examinations, only to watch younger rivals snatch the honors he craves. His persistent failures have left him bitter, and even his supportive wife, Wu, can’t lift the gloom that settles over his study. When a distant relative in Guangdong offers a chance to escape the pressure, he seizes the opportunity, hoping a change of scenery might revive his fortunes.
Arriving in the southern county, Guo finds himself drawn into a modest inn where an elderly farmer, Mi Tianlu, and his teenage daughter, Qing, are desperate for help. The old man owes a heavy debt to the local authorities, and his daughter has sold herself to keep the family afloat. Moved by their plight, Guo uses the modest travel stipend his uncle gave him to settle part of the debt, sparking a bond that challenges his own notions of duty and compassion.
As rain drives him into the farmer’s humble home, the scholar discovers a world far removed from his scholarly pursuits—one of raw survival, gratitude, and unexpected kindness. The encounter forces him to reconsider what true success means, setting the stage for a journey that is as much about inner redemption as it is about passing the next exam.

Best known by the pen name Tianranchisou, this late Ming storyteller is linked to Shi Dian Tou, a 14-story collection full of moral puzzles, social satire, and dramatic turns of fate. Little is firmly known about the writer’s life, which gives the work an added air of mystery.
