Description

Miss Chalmers stands on the dimly lit wharf, foot tapping in impatient rhythm as she confronts the night’s last steamer’s departure. Determined to reach Stephen Witherbee’s island with six trunks in tow, she demands a boat, only to be pointed toward a laid‑back power‑boat captain named Sam, whose reputation for never having wrecked seems both reassuring and oddly vague. Their terse exchange quickly turns comic as Sam questions which of the many trunks are truly essential, prompting a stubborn showdown over cargo and convenience.

What follows is a lively, slightly absurd voyage across the St. Lawrence, where Miss Chalmers’ meticulous plans clash with Sam’s easygoing pragmatism. Their banter and the boat’s creaking protest set the stage for a series of humorous mishaps and unexpected clues that hint at deeper mysteries on the island. Listeners will be drawn into a quirky, fast‑paced tale that balances wit, tension, and the charm of early‑20th‑century river travel.
