In a remote village nestled among pine‑clad hills, a clandestine market for anything deemed undesirable has taken root. The story follows a cast of vivid locals—a stern magistrate named Hukkanen, his restless nephew Wilho, the unruly servant Paavo, and a young woman named Julia returning home—each tangled in the invisible threads of forbidden commerce. Their conversations crackle with a mixture of provincial gossip, biting humor, and simmering resentment, giving a lively portrait of a community caught between tradition and the lure of covert profit.
When Wilho bursts into Hukkanen’s modest office clutching a secret parcel of foreign snuff, the two engage in a sharp exchange that exposes the absurdity of the village’s regulations. Hukkanen threatens to confiscate the contraband and auction it to the highest bidder, while Wilho defends the right to private exchange, hinting at deeper questions about authority and personal freedom. Meanwhile, Julia’s arrival awakens old family tensions, suggesting that the battle over hidden trade may soon spill into the hearts of those who keep the village’s secrets.
