KAARLO O. TANNER
A stray boy, shivering with a battered bowl, is cornered by a gang of schoolchildren who intent on tormenting him. Just as the crowd prepares a final blow, a dignified gentleman bursts from a nearby window, rebuking the youths and pulling the child to safety. The stranger’s calm authority and generous spirit turn the street into a brief sanctuary, allowing the boy to gather the few scraps of food that remain in his bowl. Grateful and trembling, the child is led inside, where he receives nourishment and a promise of further help before he must return to the world outside.
The narrative then widens to follow the town’s respected parooni, a man of high standing whose public kindness belies a lingering darkness he cannot escape. He meets a gentle, modest farm girl, and a quiet, sincere love begins to blossom between them. Their hopeful plans for marriage are painted against the backdrop of a community dependent on more than personal desire, hinting at the challenges that will test both their hearts and the parooni’s concealed burdens.

A Finnish writer who came to literature after working as a shoemaker, he wrote in Finnish even though Swedish was his first language. His life was short, but his name remains linked with early modern Finnish writing at the turn of the 20th century.
