ROSE AND ROSE
A young medical student, eager to spend weekends with his father’s practice, finds himself sharing a railway carriage with an artist and his wife. Their chance conversation about a house in Lowcester leads the artist to rent the vacant home next door to the doctor’s clinic, forging an unexpected friendship between the two families. The narrator reflects on the peculiar duty of a physician who delivers a child and then, almost by destiny, watches over that same life.
When the Allinsons’ baby, Rose, is born frail and soon loses her mother, the doctor becomes her constant caretaker, moving between his own home and the artist’s house. This intimate involvement blurs the lines between professional responsibility and personal affection, raising questions about how far a healer should go in the lives of those they serve. As the years pass, the intertwined fates of the doctor and the child promise both tender moments and subtle tensions, hinting at the complexities of duty, love, and small‑town obligations.
