Rex Kingdon and his buddies set out for a classic summer expedition on a rugged, uninhabited island off the Maine coast, ready for fishing, hiking and a bit of harmless mischief. Their plans go sideways when they discover another party already camped there, claiming—by dubious means—the same permit they thought was theirs alone. The rivalry sparks a flurry of jokes, pranks, and challenges as the two groups vie for the best spot on the wind‑blown shore.
Just as the boys settle into the scramble, a lone motorboat whistles into view, its lone passenger flashing a badge that hints at official business. The arrival of the constable forces Rex and his friends to improvise, turning potential trouble into a lively game of wits and teamwork. Through daring schemes and good‑natured camaraderie, they manage to turn the unexpected encounter into an adventure that even earns them a new recruit for their school’s baseball team.

Best known for the spirited Rex Kingdon adventure books, this early 20th-century writer published fast-moving stories for young readers under the name Gordon Braddock. The name appears to have been one of the pseudonyms used by prolific dime-novel author Gilbert Patten.
