Description

Ralph Denham leaves a cramped Liverpool flat where grief hangs heavy in the air. His mother, struggling to keep a roof over her children, asks him to seize an unexpected chance: a modest job with a rice firm in Rangoon that could ease their hardships. Though the prospect feels sudden and the world beyond the fog‑laden streets is foreign, Ralph’s loyalty and a yearning for purpose push him toward the distant shore.

The young man boards the steam‑spun vessel Pelican, his heart a mix of excitement and anxiety as the ship cuts through a restless sea. A sudden gale and a flare of fire at sea hint that the voyage will test his resolve before he even sights Burma’s coastline. Beyond the horizon lies an untamed jungle, where encounters with locals, wild beasts, and the raw forces of nature promise both danger and discovery, setting the stage for a gripping tale of courage and growth.
