Description

Born amid the grief of a king’s death and the shadow of a deadly plague, the Portuguese infanta D. Joanna entered a court already steeped in melancholy. Raised first by her devoted nurse Maria Nogueira and later by the influential lady‑in‑waiting Isabel de Menezes, she grew into a strikingly beautiful young woman whose presence was likened to a flower blooming beside a tomb. The early chapters trace her childhood in Almada, the fragile hopes of a widowed queen, and the subtle power plays that already surrounded the heirless throne of Portugal.

At seventeen, Joanna became a pawn in a grander Castilian scheme when her cousin, Prince Henry of Castile, sought her hand to cement an alliance. Their betrothal unleashed a tangled web of rival ambitions: Aragonese princes, Castilian nobles, and the ever‑watchful Alvaro de Luna each maneuvered for advantage, while rumors of poison and betrayal began to circulate through the royal courts. The narrative captures this volatile mix of personal devotion and diplomatic intrigue, offering listeners a vivid portrait of a Europe on the brink of transformation.
