About the author

Born in Porto on April 14, 1849, Alberto Augusto de Almeida Pimentel built a wide-ranging career despite not continuing to higher education for financial reasons. Early on he worked in journalism as a translator and proofreader, and that practical start grew into a remarkably productive life in letters.

His work stretched across many genres, including poetry, fiction, theater, biography, and political writing. Sources also note his admiration for Camilo Castelo Branco, whom he knew personally and treated as an important literary model.

Pimentel died in Queluz on July 19, 1925. Remembered as a versatile and industrious writer, he left behind an extensive body of work that reflects both literary ambition and a strong connection to the Portuguese press and cultural life of his time.
