Description

The story opens on a sweltering East Java morning, when the rattling toko‑wagen rolls along the smooth macadam that links the Bodjong district with Semarang’s lower town. Inside sits a European clerk, a seasoned but still curious salesman who has made the route his routine for ten years, now stepping into the massive firm’s sample room filled with bolts of cotton, clocks and crates of coffee. The bustling warehouse, crowded with Chinese, Arab and Javanese workers, gives a vivid picture of the colonial trade network that frames his world.

Wije, the protagonist, is described as a friendly, rotund man with blond hair and a keen ability to mediate between cultures, earning him the respect of both his European supervisors and the diverse clientele. Though his position has not advanced beyond salesman, his charm has secured a lucrative marriage to the commander’s daughter, linking him to the city’s social elite. As the day unfolds, his interactions hint at the delicate balance of power, ambition and identity that will shape his future in this vibrant, multilingual port.
