Description

Phineas Finn is the restless son of a respected country doctor in the rugged heart of western Ireland. Raised among a large, proud Protestant family, he has earned a reputation for talent at Trinity College and in a lively debating society, where his wit and conviction set him apart. Yet the expectations of his father and the weight of family honour linger, shaping his desire to prove himself beyond the confines of Killaloe.

When the opportunity arises to contest the parliamentary seat for Loughshane, Phineas sees a chance to marry ambition with principle. He steps into a world where Irish local loyalties, English political maneuvering, and personal relationships intersect, and where each speech and alliance may either elevate or endanger his future. As he navigates the early days of his campaign, the novel captures the tension between a young idealist’s drive and the complex realities of 1860s politics, offering a vivid portrait of a man poised on the brink of public life.
