About the author
Born in London on 24 April 1815, he became one of the most prolific and readable novelists of the Victorian era. Before literature made him famous, he worked for the British Post Office in England and Ireland, an experience that gave him a close view of institutions, class, and ordinary working life.
He wrote 47 novels, along with travel books, short fiction, and essays. Among his best-known works are the six Chronicles of Barsetshire novels and the six Palliser novels, as well as The Way We Live Now. His fiction is often praised for its wit, moral complexity, and unusually lifelike characters.
Although hugely popular in his own time, his reputation has also lasted because his books feel so human: interested not just in big events, but in how people behave in families, workplaces, churches, and public life. He died in London on 6 December 1882.
