About the author
Born in 1815, Anthony Trollope became one of the great English novelists of the Victorian era. He is especially remembered for two linked series of novels: the Chronicles of Barsetshire and the Palliser books, both admired for their memorable characters and sharp but generous understanding of society.
Trollope also had a substantial career in the British Post Office, and that working life helped shape the realism of his fiction. Alongside novels, he wrote travel books, short fiction, and an autobiography, building a reputation for steady discipline and extraordinary productivity.
He died in 1882, but his work has lasted because it feels both large in scope and close to everyday life. His novels are often prized for their wit, moral complexity, and calm confidence about how people behave when love, money, duty, and status pull in different directions.
