Description

At the heart of the novel lies the sprawling estate of Tretton Park, built on the fortunes of a modest squire turned industrial magnate. Mr. Scarborough, a self‑indulgent widower who spends his winters in the fashionable Albany, has amassed wealth from the town that grew around his clay‑rich lands, yet he remains indifferent to society’s judgment. A startling claim that his eldest son is illegitimate casts a long shadow over the family, stirring whispers that threaten the very entail that secures their riches.

The two brothers, Mountjoy and Augustus, were raised at Eton—Mountjoy now a polished officer in the Guards, Augustus a quieter, financially minded youth. Their father’s obsessive desire to provide an opulent legacy for Augustus clashes with his disdain for the legal constraints of the entail, setting the stage for a web of ambition, resentment, and hidden loyalties. As old secrets surface, each character must navigate love, duty, and the looming specter of a ruined reputation.

About the author

Anthony Trollope

Anthony Trollope

1815–1882

Best known for the richly observed Barsetshire and Palliser novels, this prolific Victorian storyteller turned the routines of public life, ambition, and family into vivid, deeply human fiction. He also drew on years working for the Post Office, which gave him a practical eye for institutions and the people inside them.
