OUTLAW JACK; OR, THE MOUNTAIN DEVIL. - BY HARRY HAZARD.
A weary wagon train has been forced to pause in a remote valley, its progress halted by the tragic death of a matriarch whose life was claimed by a stray rifle shot. The grieving emigrants, led by Caleb Mitchell, cling to the hope of reaching California’s gold fields, even as winter looms and supplies dwindle. Among the onlookers are two restless youths, Burr Wythe and Paley Duplin, who linger at the edge of the camp, each drawn by the promise of fortune and by a secret they are desperate to keep hidden.
As the mournful wail of a young girl echoes through the trees, the men confront a choice: help the stranded party or press onward toward the glittering promise of gold. Their conversation hints at a mysterious find that could change everything, while the looming mountains and the harsh frontier weather add urgency to every decision. The stage is set for a tense clash between loyalty, ambition, and the unforgiving wilderness.

1848–1909
Best known for fast-moving frontier adventures and the lost-world novel The Lost City, this prolific dime novelist turned a rough-and-ready life on the American plains into popular fiction. Writing as Jos. E. Badger and sometimes Harry Hazard, he helped shape the wild energy of late 19th-century popular storytelling.
