Description

The story opens on a sun‑kissed spring in the Transvaal, where wattle trees blaze with golden flowers and a quiet blue pond mirrors the sky. Children in bright pinafores bustle across the endless veldt, converging on a modest schoolhouse of corrugated iron and wood. Their world is a blend of rugged farm work, cheerful horse rides, and lessons that stitch together Afrikaans, English, and the rhythm of daily life.

At the centre is Petrus Joubert, a lanky boy who can out‑spurn a team of oxen and who shares an unbreakable bond with his trusty Basuto pony, Ferus—named “fearless” for good reason. Together they shepherd younger brother Theunis through school mornings, navigating the bustle of classmates and the occasional mischief that follows a fast‑moving pony. Their adventures hint at larger journeys beyond the farm, offering a warm glimpse of a resilient community poised on the edge of broader horizons.
