Description

In a single‑act comedy set in Kuopio, 1909, we step into the cramped drawing‑room of the wealthy factory owner Kerkkonen. A heated argument erupts when Kerkkonen discovers a new court ruling that could double the sum at stake in a decade‑long legal battle against his cousin Aarne. His spirited daughter Hertta, caught between duty and desire, tries to calm him while the whole family feels the pressure of the mounting debt.

Around them, the nosy neighbor Peipponen and the loyal servant Sirkka add color with quick wit and gossip, turning a serious dispute into a lively tableau of provincial life. As Hertta reminisces about a mistaken encounter with a charismatic young man at a Helsinki dance, old grievances surface, hinting at deeper rivalries and unspoken feelings. The play balances sharp dialogue with gentle satire, inviting listeners to hear the clash of pride, money, and family ties unfold in a brief but vivid snapshot of early twentieth‑century Finland.
