The tale follows a famed hero, renowned for his wit and bravery, who left the walls of Troy to sail home. After the war he has roamed a restless sea, faced storms, monsters, and the caprice of the gods, all while his thoughts remain fixed on the distant shores of Ithaca and the faithful waiting wife. Even the fiercest deity, Poseidon, seeks to keep him wandering, while Athena watches with quiet concern, ready to intervene.
At the story’s opening he is trapped on a verdant island ruled by the immortal nymph Calypso, whose charms and promise of eternal life become a gilded cage. Though she tends to him with kindness, his heart aches for the familiar hearth of his kingdom. Athena dispatches Hermes to the island, urging Calypso to relinquish him so the wanderer may finally set sail for home.
