Description

In this charming anthology the whispered legends of Russian peasants are gathered for young ears. Old Peter, a kindly grandfather living in a pine‑log hut deep in a snow‑laden forest, shares the same tales that soldiers once recited by the roadside, full of clever princesses, talking animals and enchanted objects. The retellings keep the earthy humor and vivid imagery of the original folklore while inviting listeners into a world where the Volga’s twilight glitters over endless plains.

The opening story welcomes us to the cold, creaking forest where little Maroosia and her brother Vanya huddle by a roaring stove, their faithful cat Vladimir purring in Vanya’s lap and the lanky dog Bayan guarding the doorway. As the wind rattles the branches and wolves howl in the distance, the children wait expectantly for Old Peter to begin another tale. Already the scene is alive with the warmth of family, the sparkle of snow, and the promise of adventures that will carry them far beyond the humble hut.
