Born in Leeds in 1884, Arthur Ransome became one of England’s best-loved children’s authors. He is most closely associated with the twelve-book Swallows and Amazons series, beginning in 1930, whose lake and river adventures were inspired in part by the landscapes of the Lake District and the Norfolk Broads.
Before he found his widest audience in children’s fiction, he worked as a journalist and wrote on a range of subjects. Sources consistently describe him as both an author and journalist, and they show how his firsthand knowledge of sailing and the outdoors helped give his fiction its practical detail and sense of real adventure.
Ransome died in 1967. His books have lasted because they treat children as capable, curious people and make exploration, teamwork, and imagination feel wonderfully real.
