In the shade of ivy‑clad brickwork, a once‑quiet suburb clings to its former grace. Lady Sarah’s old house stands apart from the newer tenements, its many windows catching the sun while rooks echo from the church tower above. The rhythm of the day is measured by the slow toll of the clock, the seasons passing in gentle, familiar cycles that invite both memory and imagination.
The story opens with a warm dedication to “new friends” gathered around a hearth of childhood wonder. Little Dolly, her cousins, and a chorus of bright‑eyed youngsters wander through gardens, nooks, and make‑believe courts, each sharing songs, tales, and secret games. Their voices stitch together a portrait of a community where past and present meet, inviting listeners to linger in the tender world of Old Kensington’s sun‑lit corners.

1837–1919
A sharp, warm Victorian voice, she wrote novels, essays, and fairy-tale-inflected stories while moving at the center of one of England’s great literary families. Her work blends wit, feeling, and a lively interest in women’s inner lives.
