OH! SUSANNAH! - By Mark Ambient
OH! SUSANNAH!
ACT I.
ACT II. - Scene.—Same as Act I. No time elapses.
ACT III. - Scene.—The same as Acts I and II.
In the cramped consulting room of a Pimlico doctor, the day begins with a chorus of whispered rumors and hurried letters. Aurora, the housemaid with a habit of kissing every envelope, dreams of becoming the doctor's patient, while Tupper, the portly page, puffs on his cigarette and trades gossip like currency. Their banter crackles with Cockney wit, as they speculate about the doctor's sudden departure and an upcoming society dance that promises a splash of high‑society intrigue.
The first act spirals into a delightful tangle of misunderstandings: a misplaced invitation, a flirtatious offer of a kiss, and talk of new frock coats and brandy‑soda that hint at a looming marriage. As the characters scramble to keep up appearances, the humor rises from their earnest yet bumbling attempts to fill the doctor's absence. Listeners are treated to rapid‑fire repartee, colourful period details, and a light‑hearted snapshot of Edwardian domestic life that sets the stage for more farcical twists in later acts.

Best remembered for the lively Edwardian musical comedy The Arcadians, this English dramatist also appeared on stage and published at least one farce that has survived in digital form. Writing under the pen name Mark Ambient, he moved between acting and playwriting with an easy theatrical touch.
