A young university graduate takes a position as a children’s tutor in the remote estate of Count W——, a family living on the western coast of Sweden. The household is small—an aging daughter, Eeva, who has returned from Copenhagen, and two restless boys—yet the quiet routine is soon unsettled by the tutor’s lingering fascination with Eeva, a feeling he struggles to keep hidden beneath his respectable role.

One evening, while following Eeva through a park, he overhears a hushed conversation about a forgotten child named Sigrid, her birth recorded on a torn scrap of paper. The fragment sparks his curiosity and a lingering sense of responsibility, leading him to keep the clue close. As the years pass, he wanders the northern countryside, encountering a rag‑clad little girl by a river who claims she has no parents and fears being sold. The encounter forces him to confront the mysteries of his past and the fragile lives that drift through the shadows of his world.
