Description

Set against the mist‑laden forests of 1840s Burgundy, the tale opens on a bleak autumn night where a lone traveler trudges the lonely road from Saint‑Prestat to Champ‑Buf. He bears a heavy bundle and a trembling infant, his heart heavy with the longing to reach the distant Château de Cergnes. The silence is shattered when a band of ruthless brigands, led by the formidable Favier, ambushes his carriage, leaving death and mystery in their wake.

The story follows the frantic scramble of the attackers as they scramble to erase any trace of their crime, while the grieving father’s final, desperate plea lingers in the darkness. Amid the rustling trees and the cold wind, the reader is drawn into a tense tableau of fear, loyalty, and the fragile hope of a mother’s love for her child. The first act sets a vivid stage for a gripping adventure that explores the stark contrasts between cruelty and compassion in a world where every shadow may conceal a secret.
