Description

A crisp, early‑1930s atmosphere drifts through the opening pages, where the sardonic Special Investigator James Dundee finds himself tangled in a swirl of office politics and flirtatious repartee with his sharp‑tongued secretary, Penny Crain. Their banter hides an undercurrent of tension: a misfiled folder, a impatient district attorney, and the lingering sense that something is amiss in the orderly world of legal paperwork. When a body is discovered in the quiet bedroom of Nita Selim’s house, the tidy veneer of Primrose Meadows cracks, and Dundee is thrust into a case that threatens to expose secrets long buried beneath the town’s genteel facade.

As Dundee and Penny sift through tangled records, their partnership evolves from reluctant irritation to a grudging, if humorous, collaboration. The narrative balances witty dialogue with a methodical, puzzle‑like investigation, inviting listeners to piece together clues alongside the two. With a classic melodramatic flair and a cast of colorful locals, the story promises a satisfying blend of intrigue, period charm, and the satisfying crunch of a well‑crafted whodunit.

A prolific American storyteller, she moved from romance and newspaper work into twisty mystery fiction and became best known for the detective novels featuring James "Bonnie" Dundee. Her books capture the brisk, puzzle-driven style that made crime fiction of the 1920s and 1930s so inviting.
