Kinnarniemi is a sprawling rural parish where two humble churches stare across a narrow strait and an ancient cemetery lies half‑buried beneath the fields. For generations the villagers have lived simply, their homes plain, their days filled with hard work and little concern for outward beauty. The arrival of a new railway line, a handful of shops, cafés and a flourishing market suddenly threatens to reshape their quiet way of life.
Through the eyes of characters like the diligent blacksmith’s apprentice, the stern mistress of the old graveyard, and the restless heir of the once‑prosperous Risumäki estate, the novel paints a vivid picture of a community caught between tradition and progress. Rumors of disputes over the placement of a new, grander church echo old arguments, while young villagers begin to glimpse education and electricity for the first time. As the parish stands on the brink of change, its residents must decide whether to cling to familiar customs or embrace the uncertain promises of the modern world.
