Merrimeg is a bright‑eyed little girl who loves to sing while she works, but her playful spirit sometimes gets her into trouble. One morning she’s tasked with sweeping the kitchen, and eager to finish quickly she mischievously dumps the dust into the large, empty fireplace. The sudden gust that follows whisks her up the chimney, plunging her into a dark, soot‑filled tunnel where she must cling to the bricks for dear life.
Inside the chimney she discovers a bustling community of tiny, spark‑headed imps who keep the air alive with their wind‑bags. Their frantic activity creates a dazzling, flickering light that both threatens to blow Merrimeg out and offers a strange, magical guide through the gloom. As she learns to navigate this unexpected world, Merrimeg’s quick wit and courage are put to the test, promising a whimsical adventure that balances mischief with wonder.

Best remembered for a whimsical fantasy that earned recognition in the very first Newbery Medal year, this American writer brought a lawyer’s discipline and a storyteller’s warmth to children’s fiction. His books often mix everyday life with old-fashioned wonder.
