Description

Nestled between the winding Maas and the Meierij of ’s‑Hertogenbosch, the modest landscape of Heusden hides a surprisingly tangled past. Once a frontier of shifting provincial borders, the area moved between Brabant and Holland before settling as the “Land van Heusden.” Its low‑lying fields may appear unremarkable today, yet the castle that crowns the town has long been a focal point for power, trade, and conflict, shaping the lives of the fifteen‑thousand souls scattered across its seventeen villages.

The narrative traces the castle’s origins to the early lords of the former County of Teisterbant, whose lineage is shrouded in legend as much as fact. After devastating Viking raids in the ninth century, the fortress was rebuilt under Boudewijn, who fortified it with massive walls and twin towers, turning Heusden into a formidable stronghold. A colorful medieval romance adds a human touch: a daring rescue of a king’s daughter, the enchanted red spindle, and a pact that would echo in the town’s heraldry. Listeners will discover how geography, warfare, and myth intertwine to give Heusden its enduring character.
