Description

Two bright university students set off from Leiden in the summer of the early nineteenth century, eager to replace idle tourism with a serious survey of the northern provinces. They chose to travel on foot, armed with sturdy boots and a shared conviction that a true understanding of their homeland requires direct experience of its peoples, landscapes and customs. Their destination is Friesland, a region that has long preserved a strong sense of independence and whose way of life still bears the imprint of older regimes.

As they wander from village to village, one student, a budding economist, probes the reasons behind a gradual loss of local pride, while his companion, a lover of history, catalogues surviving rituals and artefacts. They witness a traditional burial, taste humble fare linked to ancient rites, and marvel at the intricate stonework of the Bolsward church. Through these encounters the pair begins to sketch a portrait of a culture caught between steadfast tradition and the slow tide of modern influence, offering listeners a vivid glimpse into a world both familiar and uniquely Dutch.
